TFM-Northfield-VermontSpeakers:

  • Steven Atherton
  • Megan Atherton

Scriptures used:

  • Psalm 32
  • Luke 5:18-25
  • Psalm 51

Subject:

  • Selah:  This means stop and think about what you just read.
  • In Psalm 32:5, If we acknowledge our sin and ask forgiveness, He forgives us.
  • Have you sinned?  Has He forgiven you?  Have you received it?
  • The story of the man with a palsy, whom Jesus, seeing their faith, forgave his sins rather than saying he was healed.
  • It takes faith to say rise up and walk because you see the evidence of it.  It doesn’t take faith to say thy sins are forgiven, but that he could see his sins were forgiven, he was healed.
  • This man received the Lord’s healing.
  • Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity.  The Lord is our hiding place.  Many people in the Bible found themselves hidden by the Lord.  For example, Moses, David and others.
  • Most people walk in the presumption of God’s forgiveness.  They have a “think I’m going to heaven” attitude.  Those that walk in this presumption are those He will tell to get away from Him, they are workers of iniquity.
  • Mercy – is when you know there is no excuse for what you have done.  Is man merciful?  No.  We feel we deserve something better than others and dwell and walk in pride.  Those that do this will not make it to heaven.
  • Tender mercy is given to those who recognize they’ve done wrong and ask the Lord for mercy.  He forgives even those who the world would never think of forgiving.  For example, Osama Bin Laden.  If he went to the Lord asking for mercy, he would be given it.
  • We can’t clean ourselves up.  When we see how horrible we are, we look to Him who redeems us.  We have to walk by faith.
  • Seeing ugliness in others and not ourselves is iniquity.  We don’t want to see the truth about ourselves.  He cares about the inner part, not the outer part.  Hyssop is an expectorant that brings up the bad stuff.  We need that hyssop.  We don’t want it but it is good for us.   Guile is “acting” like a Christian, this is iniquity.
  • When David says “make me to hear joy and gladness”  he acknowledges that it is heard to receive these things.  David knew he was not doing good (with Bathsheba) but He makes us to hear joy and gladness in the midst of despair, and we get up and walk again.  He shows us He’s there, He makes it evident.
  • David asked the Lord to create in him a clean heart – he can’t do it himself.  Take not thy Holy Spirit from me – he knew that he had done worse than Saul.
  • Joy of salvation – when that departs, it is our fault.  We don’t want that hyssop again, don’t want the truth shown to us.  Focusing on ourselves robs us of joy.
  • Teach transgressors thy ways:  sinners are converted unto Him, not the righteous.
  • David had deep sorrow of his sin.  Count it all joy when you fall into divers temptations.  It is not going to be joyful to go through it.
  • God is exalted, not us, when we get to this place.  Our joy and gratefulness will be apparent to all.
