TFM-Northfield-VermontSpeakers:

  • Steve Atherton
  • Carrie Cannon

Scriptures used:

  • James 1:27
  • Matthew 17:15-17
  • 1 John 4:8-17

Subject:

  • He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Without Jesus there is such a hopelessness in this world.
  • I chose to give my life to the Lord and I am thankful that He gave me that opportunity, that we would have a hope in Him.
  • Jesus is our Savior, and the Holy Spirit is our Comforter, there is joy in the Lord, we can always find that joy though Jesus.
  • I need help right now. Jesus is here right now. And He is ready to help us with no complaint about it. He demonstrates His willingness to help us. We take advantage of that by faith, not religion.
  • In James 1:27 it is the only time in the scripture where religion is mentioned in a positive way.
  • Paul considered his prior religion as dung. Knowing the Word is important, and there is no excuse for anyone to not know the Word. He wants us to read it. And we want to do everything else but read it. We can come to the place where we read the Word like a religion. The Lord can use this, but it can sometimes become a pride thing.
  • Scientists can measure things in the body caused by demonic spirits but they can not be cured by a drug. It is only taken away by the power of God.
  • Part of the growth process the disciples went through, they were unable cure the boy with the demonic spirit. They thought the problem was too big for God.   Jesus had a certain anger about them not being able to cure the child, Jesus rebuked the devil and the child was free from that hour. He was free indeed and there was no need for further intervention.
  • I can relate to: Why can’t I do that? It is a fight of faith. When we hang on to faith as a cord, it seems to have the size of sewing thread. The amazing thing is the Lord works with that little faith. Invest whatever faith you have in Christ and invest again and again and the Lord will build up a mighty faith in you. But you have to choose to exercise yourself in it. Exercise doesn’t always feel good, and we don’t want to or feel like doing it.
  • It is not a natural thing, it is the thing we absolutely do NOT want to do is step out in faith.
  • People have a choice to make. To believe all the lousy crap that I was taught before in the world, or to believe what this Word says? I chose to believe this Word. I have to step out in faith to believe it.   You say you have faith, what you should do is step out in it.
  • A prayer to the Lord in the morning is an exercise of faith. As you exercise yourself in faith, it gets easier.
  • There are examples of people in the bible who had mustard seed type of faith, the type that can move mountains.
  • The mustard seed knows there is a sun and it doesn’t give up. It wiggles around until it finds a crack or someplace where it can move up toward the sun.   It reaches the sun. The knowing faith, not the wondering faith is the type of faith that moves mountains. The Lord wants each of us to have that type of faith.
  • The mustard seed faith knows that God is love. You may get into situations you don’t like and wonder where is God in the midst of this. When you know that God is love, it is amazing how you can pass through anything. When you wonder whether God is love, you really struggle.
  • How is anyone going to know what love is unless someone shows them? When someone doesn’t love you, you have to choose to love them anyway. We don’t grow up knowing love in the schools. In school we learn a lot of awful stuff. We can choose to love, just as Jesus loves us. We can take that love He gives us, and give it to someone else. He will show you ways to love others. They may be different than the ways you thought before. We aren’t always loveable, but it doesn’t justify us in not loving them. It would be easier that way, but Jesus commands us to love one another.
  • Once you know that Jesus is real and has forgiven you of your sins: There is the day when someone receives Jesus as Lord and Savior. That’s the birthday in Christ. Usually you go into a bubble of a wonderful time of the Lord pouring out blessings to you. Then as you grow up, we have growing pains and our parents ask us to clean up after ourselves. We realize after this that we are wrong and there is no justification for ourselves.   When we get down to brass tacks, the truth, we are down in the pit, and ask the Lord to help us and have mercy upon us and ask forgiveness. We take our first step, and step out and confront the world once again when we would really like to hide. Then God moves, and then the scenario you thought there was no way out of, is now behind you. You are forgiven and are free. Now you can testify to others of the truth of the Gospel and others can get set free. Now you are speaking of the Lord in a knowing way, not a wondering way, because of your own experience.
  • The Gospel shows us the love of God. Paul the apostle said I am ready to be offered up, I have finished my course. Until then, for you and me, there is room for improvement, you have to fear God, not taking for granted that you are saved. They are uncomfortable places to stand in, but they are good places to stand in. We have to change our way of thinking. If we want to walk with Christ, we have to be the ones willing to change, not others, or Him.
