TFM-Northfield-VermontSpeakers:

  • Steven Atherton
  • Charles Hocker

Scriptures used:

  • 1 John 1:1-10
  • 1 Peter 5:5-7
  • Ruth
  • Joshua 1
  • Hebrews 13:7
  • Hebrews 13:17
  • Romans 13:1

Subject:

  • When we receive the Lord we have opportunity to fellowship with those in the light.
  • The lack of light is death.
  • In order to see the light we need to receive correction of others, even children.
  • As you pull back into the darkness it gets worse and worse.
  • We make the determination to receive that correction and to fight through it.
  • We need to come to that light and have those things exposed for what they are, so we can get shed of those things.
  • Ruth (from the book of Ruth) was the picture of submission. We talk about coming together to a perfect man. We can’t do that without submission.
  • Submission is a joy! It isn’t a burden. Because you love Him and you know His way is better than your way.
  • Every part of the body ministers to the other. Every part needs to receive. It is critical.
  • This takes humility. Cast off the carnal mind, and God moves.
  • We can’t go around trying to establish our own righteousness, that is walking in darkness.
  • Ruth submitted herself to her mother in law. Think about our struggle submitting to those above us.
  • When you don’t have things go your way, you get a bitter attitude. You want to keep it because it justifies you. You can’t serve God in that place at all.
  • Ruth is not an Israelite so she is not welcome anywhere she goes. She went out to get food from the fields reserved for the poor. Boaz recognized the Lord had grace upon Ruth. She found grace in Boaz’s sight and was overwhelmed.
  • Ruth is taking care of her mother in law too. Her mother in law tells Ruth to lie at Boaz’s feet, and no matter what she thought of it, Ruth did it in obedience.
  • Jesus came through her line.
  • God is bringing together a body. He did it first with Israel in the time of Joshua.
  • Joshua was Moses’ servant. He couldn’t shake Joshua. Moses was God’s servant.
  • Joshua was a picture of submission to Moses.
  • Joshua saw how it had worked with the power of God on Moses. Because he was God’s servant it was God who did the work.
  • Be strong and of a good courage. God told Joshua this 3 times!
  • The Israelites said they would do whatsoever Joshua commanded. Do we do this? Do we put conditions on things asked of us?
  • Remember and obey those who have the rule over you, and submit yourselves.
  • Subject unto the higher powers: that means submit! – but not unto the worldly powers in the government. It means to submit to those who have the rule over you in the Lord.
  • God gives you a free will to submit or not.
  • The sword of the Lord, the word of God separates. If you are separated, you are condemned!
  • Submit voluntarily of your own free will in accordance with the Word of God.
