TFM-Northfield-VermontSpeakers:

  • Steven Atherton
  • Megan Atherton

Scriptures used:

  • Psalm 116:12-13
  • Colossians 3:1-15
  • Colossians 3:23
  • Matthew 6:22-24
  • Zechariah 8:16
  • Ephesians 4:25
  • Matthew 5:37
  • James 4:6

Subject:

  • We come to the Lord with thanksgiving.
  • Matt Redman’s song “Heart of worship”.
  • Thankfulness comes from something greater than ourselves.
  • We have so much for which to be thankful.
  • Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily as to the Lord and not unto men.
  • Thankfulness only occurs when you are looking up (i.e. from a place of humility rather than pride)
  • Doing all things heartily as unto the Lord and not unto men is the key to your eye being single.  Col. 3:23 and Matthew 6:22-24.
  • Putting off your ways so you can begin to walk in His ways.
  • Seeking those things which are above and setting your affection on those will not please your flesh.  This is a choice to love (i.e. prefer God) and act of faith.  You will never “feel” like doing it nor will your flesh be pleased when you do it.  It requires determination.  That is what it means to “set” your affections.
  • Water baptism (Col. 3:1-4 and Romans 6)
  • Mortify your members which are on the earth (i.e. your natural man).  Do not let those things rule you as they once did in your life.
  • All those things we are to put off (i.e. anger, wrath or malice) are always more fun or pleasing to our flesh than those things we are to put on because the things we are to put on do not justify us.
  • Speak every man TRUTH to his neighbor.  Col. 3:9, Zech. 8:16 and Eph. 4:25.  We really have no idea of how much we lie.  We usually lie because we are afraid of what other people will think of us if we tell them the truth.
  • Put on these things (in other words as we learn of Christ and His ways, we are to walk in them).  Let us be doers of the Word not just hearers.  None of these things are natural to us.  If you are waiting to “feel” like doing them, you never will.  You have to “choose” to want to do them.
  • Let the peace of God rule in your heart.  This is a choice you make by faith in the sufficiency of Jesus’ sacrifice.  You cannot do this in pride, but only in humility.
