TFM-Northfield-VermontSpeakers:

  • Steven Atherton
  • Carrie Cannon

Scriptures used:

  • Colossians 3
  • Matthew 11:28-30
  • 2 Timothy 2:1-2

Subject:

  • Colossians 3 is about abiding in the vine.
  • The Lord can bring us through all things. The Lord can take our burdens. When you learn to walk in Jesus there is a calm, quiet peacefulness. No matter what goes on around you, you can put your eyes on Him and He gives you rest.
  • The eye of the storm is a place where you can be free of fear and worry. The Lord is steadfast. He never changes. When we read this Word and read how he has delivered others, we see that He is always there, and there is no fear.
  • Even death doesn’t overcome the Lord.
  • He is beautiful for situation.
  • We can stand and have rest in our souls.
  • The ones who were the faithful men described in 2 Timothy 1 are those in Described in Colossians.
  • Mortify means kill. Mortifying your members means put away those things such as: fornication. When you are a guy, it’s hard for that thought to not come up. Give that no place in your life at every single turn. That is mortifying a thing.
  • Jesus accepted us as we were in that state, and didn’t ask us to change a single thing, other than to acknowledge we are sinners.
  • God does not mortify these things, it is an act of your will. It shows where your heart is.
  • Anger is an act of our will, we are justified in it. We want bad things to happen to bad people. We are covered by grace. We are the same as them, other than the grace of God.
  • In a divorce, there is a lot of malice. When the other party moves on, we hang onto the malice and justify ourselves, because pride is at the center of this and destroys us.
  • If we tell each other the truth, the truth sets us free but is not pleasing to the flesh.
  • Jesus was the only one who was sinless.
  • How can you adhere to the things of God until you know them? Once you know them, go forth in them with whatever you have. The Gospel is the manual of our Creator to His creation. We don’t measure up to it, but He is the standard and the more we learn this, the more we can walk in it.
  • We are to put on bowels of mercy as the elect of God. There is an elect of God and those who elect God. Just as we see Paul do, do likewise!
  • Bowels of mercy – in your bowels you know what is right of God and do the things of God such as extend mercy despite what you may think of others.
  • Corrie Ten Boom did this, she forgave the prison guard who kept her in the prison, after he asked her for forgiveness. She had nothing in her to forgive him. She asked the Lord and as she extended her hand, the Lord gave her forgiveness for him.
  • Humbleness of mind: we think we are great, this is a hard one. That is the opposite of pride.
  • We have to put on that humbleness of mind. It is critical. God resisteth the proud and giveth more grace to the humble. Cast off that pride and fight.
  • Meekness: realize you can do no good thing but by Him.
  • Forbearing one another: putting up with one another. You can’t put on the love of God until you ask Him to fill you with His love.
