Scriptures used:
- Psalm 23
Subject:
- The Lord is my shepherd: this was written by King David about himself.
- This is true of him. It can also be true of us, as long as we choose to become one of His flock.
- The sheep are helpless without the shepherd. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: the green pastures are His Word. He restoreth our soul: He brings us back to where we need to be, leads us gently on.
- The still waters: sheep are afraid of muddy, rushing waters. The still waters bring peace.
- The valley of the shadow of death is this life. We fear no evil because He is with us.
- The rod is to keep the enemies away, also to correct us on our way. The staff has a crook in it for the sheep’s neck, to gently guide it back to the path it needs to go on.
- Thou anointest my head with oil: anointest means “make fat”. In other words, we will have everything we need.
- My cup runneth over: There is plenty for others as well as ourselves. We can share.
- David says he is sure mercy will follow him all the days of his life: his life is a testimony of the mercy of the Lord upon Him, and his acceptance that he is a sinner and needs the Lord’s mercy.
