Speakers:

  • Robin Atherton
  • Karen Hocker
  • Megan Atherton

Scriptures used:

  • Luke 2:22-38
  • 1 Samuel 25
  • Proverbs 16:6

Subject:

  • Anna the prophetess in Luke 2 and Abigail are discussed tonight.
  • Both of these women we are talking about were not in good circumstances.
  • What were their choices?  They could have made very different choices but they chose to serve the Lord.
  • They called themselves handmaidens, (female bondslaves ).
  • Each of them had situations that most of us allow to stop us from being servants.
  • But they had strength in the Lord and made the choice to fear Him and serve Him.
  • Anna was a servant of God.  Spent most of her adult life as a widow. Served God with fasting and prayers night and day in the temple.  She spoke to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.   She was a prophetess and handmaiden of God.  She was in a position of having been widowed for many years.  Her natural hopes and dreams were put aside as she served a God she believed.
  • We do not depart from evil outside of fearing God.
  • They had to have feared God to have done what they did.
  • It’s a choice to fear God and choose Him.   We can depart from evil by choice of Him.
  • Abigail: Had she not done what she did concerning David and his men, she would have suffered the same fate as her husband. She asked that the sin that her husband committed be put upon her.  She asked David to hear her.  She asks to bear the iniquity of her husband.  She served the household well even though she had a difficult household.   She had the wisdom to stand up and do what needed to be done.  She bowed her knee and asked him to forgive her.  She believed God and knew the testimony of God.  She knew who David was.
  • She was an interceder, and David was grateful.
  • He sent and communed with her to take her as his wife.  She went quickly to make that intercession in time.
  • By the fear of the Lord men depart from evil:   Proverbs 16:6
