Subject:
- Jesus was preaching the Gospel on his way to the cross. The chief priests and the scribes were asking Jesus where he gets his authority – they are those who have gone to school and believe one should have credentials.
- The scribes were always reasoning with themselves to give the correct answer. Jesus answered them perfectly. We are called to do likewise.
- The parable of the man with a vineyard and let it to husbandmen. This is an analogy to Jesus sending His prophets to bring forth His Word. The Word was not accepted from the prophets, they were killed, and then finally Jesus was sent and He was killed also.
- The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner. Ps. 118:22, Ephesians 2:20-22. Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. If you fall on the stone and break, you are laying down your life to the Lord. Ps. 51: 16-17. That broken spirit is a good thing. But if you refuse and reject, you will be ground to powder, when the stone falls on you it is judgment.
- The chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on Jesus. They were sneaky and sent spies to feign themselves just men. They wanted to bring him to the governor.
- They were pretending to be submissive and called Him Master.
- Jesus perceived their thoughts and held them accountable. He answered them perfectly again, and they held their peace. Jesus stopped their mouths.
- The Sadducees (who believe there is no resurrection) tried to trick Jesus with a question about who will the woman be wife to in the resurrection. Jesus answered that He is a God of the living, and all live unto Him. God has given us the power to become His children, through faith.
- Some of the scribes answered that Jesus had well said and called Him Master.
- They asked Him how can Christ be David’s son. Ps. 110:1. David called Him Lord because the Lord has been forever and was not David’s son.
- Jesus cautions the disciples to not follow the example of the scribes and Pharisees. He said this in the audience of all the people.
